I ♥ Faces ~ Vacation Story

So, my sister decided that she needs a “vacation” from I ♥ Faces. I just don’t know why. It’s not like she has been spending hour after hour working on the site and making what equates to pennies per hour for the amount of work she does. What a whiner! ☺ Actually, I’m thrilled that Angie is taking a “break”. (I don’t really consider it a break because I happen to know that she and Amy have tons of things planned this week.) Angie and Amy have created an awesome site, and we all appreciate what a neat forum they have given photographers to learn, share and grow!
The plan this week is to tell a story through pictures with the theme of vacation. My vacation experience is nothing like my brother’s, but here goes!
Stop #1 – Pittsburgh

Our last vacation was kind of like a road trip. It was taken in August of 2008 basically on a whim. Mark had to go to Pittsburgh for a business meeting, and we decided we might as well have a mini-vacation before school started up again. There was one small issue of me being stuck in a hotel room for an entire evening with 3 little kids while Mark was at the meeting. I had the brilliant idea to grab the GPS and head off to Walmart “only” 8 miles away. That trip was the most terrifying drive of my life.

Roads in Pittsburgh are majorly confusing and super steep. I ended up going up an awful hill that was on such an incline that I couldn’t get out into traffic. I finally decided to back down the hill blind because it was so steep I couldn’t see anything behind me. My 4 year old (at the time) wisely did his best to convince me that we should go back to the hotel. I continued on only to find an abandoned building where the GPS told me a Walmart should be. We ended up finding a mall that I stayed at as long as I could because I was terrified of the drive back.

When we finally got back to the hotel, Nathan decided to flood the bathroom when I was giving him a bath. My nerves were absolutely frayed by the end of the evening.
We left the next morning accidentally leaving the cherished Bumbo seat behind. Needless to say, Pittsburgh does not hold fond memories for me.
Bye, bye, Bumbo!
Stop #2 – Idlewild
Looks like Ben took over in the photos above. There are tons more in the full album. Idlewild was awesome! It’s basically an amusement park that caters to families. There were plenty of activities to keep young children busy. We plan on heading back there again…definitely worth the trip!
Stop #3 – Flight 93 Memorial
We headed off to visit Mark’s sister who lives in Chesapeake, Virginia. Along the way, we came across signs for the memorial for the September 11th Pennsylvania plane crash. Even though it was late at night and pitch dark, we decided to visit the site.
It was a sobering experience. I’m glad we decided to stop.
Stop #4 – Aunt Cori’s house in Chesapeake, Virginia
Aunt Cori has an in-ground pool which spells P-A-R-A-D-I-S-E for Nathan. We really didn’t have to leave the house.![]()

We did end up leaving paradise for awhile to visit the Children’s Museum.
I also got to visit my best friend from high school and see her very first home. Her husband is in the military. They have moved several times and lived overseas for most of their marriage. They were thrilled when they finally got the opportunity to settle in a place of their own.
Even though Shona was exhausted from a hard day of working out (she’s a personal trainer), she and her kiddos came over for awhile and played Wii with us. (Note the dreaded flash shadows! I just didn’t know any better! ☺)
So there are the highlights of our totally impromptu vacation. Can’t wait to see what other people share on I ♥ Faces!

I totally forgot about that hill story! I would have been petrified too...I don't know how you ever backed it down the hill backwards. ACK!
This idea is so much fun. I think I'm not going to get any work done around the house because I'm going to be reading stories all week! :)

great pictures,... :) i love it!
Seriously that hill sounds scary! And the poor Bumbo :(
The pool photos are so fun--looks like everyone had a blast for this vacation just being a "whim"
What a trip! I know that they are going to build another more permanent memorial for flight 93 out there in Shanksville but this make-shift one was really touching.
Oh my gosh Drew! What in the world with the hills? That is crazy. I worked there one summer in a housing project. I don't remember it being that hilly! You are So brave to have left the hotel and gone out on adventure : ).
I have always wanted to visit that memorial too!
Your friends house is pretty. I don't know if I could have a friend that was a personal trainer. That would stress me out a little : ).
I laughed my head off about the dreaded flash shadows : ). You are so funny! Hope your last week of school is EXCELLENT!
Great pictures and backing down that hill sounds really scarey...I would love to visit Flight 93's memorial sight...
What a great road trip, minus the loss of the Bumbo! That was a bad loss:-(
The 9/11 memorial was amazing! I've never seen photos of that before. I'm sure you were WORE OUT when you got home:-)
I'm cracking up at the week off we're supposed to be having... now we'll just be sitting on our computers reading vacation stories!

Wow, you really did have an adventure. I'm so sorry to hear of all the problems in Pittsburgh. Glad to see the rest of your impromptu trip went better and I'm impressed at how much you packed into your trip. So much wonderful memories and meaning you captured on just a "whim".
Wow..you take really great pictures! Awesome!
Sometimes the impromptu trips take the cake! Great pictures from a great adventure!
props to you for taking on that hill backwards! i would've been just as scared! road trips are so much fun and i think vacations with several different stops & scenery are the BEST! great pictures :)
Wow, that hill story is terrible. So glad your vacation picked up after that :)
Wow, it sounds like you needed a vacation from your vacations. Great pictures. I know what you mean about the flash shadows!
Despite the beginning, it looks like a great impromptu trip! Plus you have a great story to boot.
Oh my gosh! I am now officially scared of PA. ForEVER. The Idlewild photos were lovely, and the rest of the trip sounded like it was just perfect, so I suppose one "thumbs down" out of the whole trip isn't too bad! And, let's face it, it makes for a great story! Just have to say that I'm very glad that you survived; I'd be so very sad if I didn't have the chance to visit your blog!
Wonderful pics! Mine is here.
What great fun and pictures..."Happy summer" this year for all!
First of all, I would have never noticed the shadow until you pointed it out! And secondly, what fun memories and you did such a great job capturing them to keep forever. I love that first tunnel shot. So cool. Seattle has some steep terrifying hills that always gave me anxiety during traffic and would actually make me sweat when I owned my stick shift! ugghhhh.
Love your post! :)
What a great trip and some wonderful pictures. I think we may do a bit of a road trip this year, looking forward to recording it in photos.
great series! :0)
what a fun trip, i stress over the just get in and go trips more than the ones we plan. looks like it was a great time for you.
thanks for visiting my vacation. i love camping, tell your husband to buy/rent a camper/rv and then you can camp but have the hotel like quality of a real bed. :^)
Those are great pictures... The Flight 93 Memory looks like a very sobering place to visit... but somewhere I would love to go.
I can totally connect with your Pittsburgh experience, I was out on those roads a very few times when I lived there. Makes me glad for our boring flat Illinois land. :)
